Biography
At shows, there is usually good reason to hold residency at
the bar for most of the evening. It is a way to shelter the
rain of predictable openers with varied cookie cutter
attempts to pull listeners in. But then, there are those
rare bands that break conversations and bring bodies to the
floor; quieting kids like Christmas. Russian Circles is one
of these bands.
They straddle genre lines, without riding the fence and
manage to be incredibly cohesive. Musically, they can slide
effortlessly from a darkly foreboding ambient swell to a
driving and texturally heavy sonic assault. This can then
often mutate seamlessly into irresistibly catchy melodic
sections.
"The band's breathless, riveting instrumentals employ
technically daunting musicianship that somehow avoids
wankery. It’s neither hardcore nor metal, but its power is
undeniable." -The Onion, Chicago
After just six months, they are already on a second pressing
of self released EPs and have already played on a few sold
out bills in Chicago, including one where they headlined.
They’ve also done a quick jaunt to the east coast and plan
to tour constantly once they have a substantial release out.
They are a fledgling band, but have learned a lot from their
former projects (Dakota/Dakota, Riddle of Steel) and are
growing at an alarming rate.

RUSSIAN CIRCLES
Enter
LP (HWC015)
Even though they don't play the most accessible music -- an instrumental amalgam of punk, metal, indie-rock and even prog -- Russian Circles have it. "Enter," their debut album, definitely doesn't sound like a new band clumsily over-thinking their songs, but instead it sounds like one cohesive composition in six movements. Each movement holds its breath through the intense moments, but exhales through sweeping, airy horizons that slowly collapse into dense panoplies, showcasing the band's shifting dynamics, and not just the binary code of loud /quiet.
