The Chicago punk and hardcore scene has its ups and downs. As band members grow up and grow out of the scene, things are shitty until the younger members of the area get together and start forming bands. 2005 Chicago is in one of those stages as I type and you read. Living here is exciting. New venues are popping up in the strangest places, new bands are consistently surprising show-goers who have never heard of them, and more labels are releasing records by bands that really deserve it. Rather than trying to fulfill a fledgling contract of some sort and saturating the record store shelves with garbage that isn't fit to use as a coaster, labels like Hewhocorrupts Incorporated and bands like Not Enough Gold are still doing things because they love to.

It's the old hardcore trial and error story: Members have sloughed it out in lesser groups, only to eventually find themselves in a winning combination a few bands into their own musical careers. Taking a good thing and making it better, Not Enough Gold use hardcore and not only an aggressive release of emotions, but as a way to have some fun. Good natured live shows compliment their confrontational music, with everyone going bonkers and no intention of hurting anyone. Lay to rest the meathead way of thinking, because hardcore can still be fun.

NOT ENOUGH GOLD Live & Learn CDEP (HWC010) Live and learn folks. Chicago's Not Enough Gold release their first offering, chalked full of pissed off, renegade fueled hardcore. Crafty guitar work complimented with tongue-in-cheek lyrics provide ammo for this short but sweet thrash attack. Backup vox by members of Fall Out Boy, The Killer, and Sidewalk.
