Change in Operating Procedures…

As some of you may have noticed we’ve been pretty quiet lately (ie less news updates, signings, etc). However, while things may seem less active from the outside, on the inside we’ve been putting in a lot of thought on the future of the label given how much the selling of music has changed since our inception. Do we keep doing the label as is? Stop completely? Change our approach and continue? While thinking through these options we reflected on what we like and don’t like about running a label. In summary – we like helping bands we enjoy and we don’t like or necessarily feel the need to spend money doing so anymore given the many ways one can release, distribute, and promote music today.
After thinking about these things – we’ve decided to change how the label operates. After releasing HWC023 “Locrian / Harpoon” split 7” we will cease releasing music on physical formats. Instead – we will transition to a digital-only release model. This model will no longer focus on releasing “records” but rather individual tracks or a group of tracks. The two more unique elements of this model will be its “name your price” and “charity” aspects. To clarify – we will be using a newer web application called Band Camp to allow those interested in our releases the opportunity to set their own price for the tracks they want to download. Furthermore, any band that releases a track or tracks on the label will be asked to pick a charity that will be the sole recipient of all money collected from the release. This means no money will be passed on to the label or band – only to a predetermined charity.
We are excited to announce that our friends in THE PSALMS will be our first release under this model. 97-SHIKI had the pleasure of playing with THE PSALMS in SINGAPORE on our SE ASIA tour in Fall of 2008 and we’ve been dying to do something with them ever since. More news to come…
